House in Payangan / Bali

This house is located in the sub-urban area of Payangan Ubud. The owner, who is a Indonesian Tribal Art Collector, brings a unique idea to the surface for his new residence. Together with Principal Architect Cheong Yew Kuan we want to bring the Clients idea to life, creating a Gallery house. We designed the house following the unique shape and contours of the land. By doing so, we expect the house to be a piece of art on its own. The rich variety of trees onsite brought us to make them a part of the architecture. We took a long process to reach this concept by trying a lot of design options and ideas. The client was very patient about his new home. Therefore, we took our time to find the perfect concept for his needs and arts.

Many concepts and ideas went by for this estate. We finally came to decide that the current idea would be the client’s perfect home. The lands unique character and contour brought us to an architectural concept where a leaf is sitting delicately on ruins. We represented the idea by the leaf being a elegant wooden roof structure sitting on blocks of rough stone walls. This gives it a contrast between a sleek and modern look and the roughness of the stone. Each element went to severe studies and considerations to find the perfect composition between these two essential elements.

The heart of this design, the leaf, is shaped to accommodate the sites characteristics and unique configuration. The structure is held by a timber covered steel construction. It was carefully studied together with the structural engineers to give it its unique light and gentle look, while providing a strong character to the architecture. We designed the stone blocks with two things in mind, rigidity and perforation. To accomplish this, we teared the stone blocks in certain areas to create light wells, air flow, windows and openings including the main entrance.

Talking about functionality of the residence, the client required several bedrooms, including a private guest area for unrelated guests. Therefore, we proposed a guest wing with 2 typical bedrooms, and for the client’s friends and family, 2 guest bedrooms in the main wing in addition to the master bedroom. With this configuration and requirements in mind, and with all the nature the site has to offer, this residence came to cover 1.000sqm of the land. We arranged the building coverage carefully, keeping in mind that this estate will be set as a home for an elderly couple. Therefore, we designed it to have as less steps as possible for the masters free roaming, even with the rough contour offered by the site.
