Tunak bay is a natural forest reserve located south east of Lombok, Indonesia. It is protected by the government of Indonesia and developed together with the Korean government. While being a natural reserve, the Tunak Bay holds a vast animal and plantation varieties.
"Away, away, from men and towns, to the wild wood and the downs, to silent wilderness, where the soul need not repress its music"
The land of Tunak spreads along 90 hectares of hills and valleys. Stunning beaches and cliffs surround the bay. It is also home to a variety of deer, exotic butterflies, and other wildlife. Keeping this in mind, the beautiful landscape is open to the sunset sun from the west.
The government of Indonesia wants to create a eco-resort that is respectful to the protected forest. To achieve this, our idea for this project was to integrate all the animal wildlife into the experience. Additionally, we want to do as minimal construction as possible. We started by looking at the traditional construction methods of Indonesia. We have studied ways of constructing with minimal impact. Hence, the wood construction became our starting point in approaching this project.
As we mentioned before, respect towards nature is key to this project. Therefore, we have designed every building using wooden structures sitting on stilts at least 1 meter above ground. By doing so, wildlife can pass underneath the buildings. In addition, we propose to use use traditional wooden houses of Indonesia.
As a resort, the 20 private villas will be re-using traditional joglo houses from Java, Indonesia. These structures will be facing the open ocean to the South. The idea of using re-used wooden houses are to strengthen the concept of being sustainable and respectful to nature. Additionally, large and spacious bedrooms, open bathrooms with outdoor showers and gardens, wide decks and a small cabana are incorporated into each villa giving a luxurious atmosphere to the resorts experience.
